Itinerary (2009)

Picture 10All participants will get hands-on sessions led by some of the best-known professionals in Washington and Oregon.

TRAINERS:
Tony Overman, past president of NPPA (ethics session). Colin Mulvaney, multimedia contest chair NPPA (video editing, storytelling methods). Kurt Austin, KGW photographer with 19 Seattle-area Emmy awards and Adam Tischler, KING5 photographer (shooting and storytelling methods). Yan Shvalb, Sr. Systems Engineer for Apple and certified Final Cut Studio Instructor. Anna King, Northwest Public Radio reporter and former print journalist (interviewing for great audio) and Canon corporate camera trainer Mike Mount. (Read the trainer bios)

Check in: Intermediate group — Saturday Nov. 7, 9:30 – 10 a.m.
Workshop conclusion — 4 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8, with ‘awards’ ceremony and Canon G10 giveaway.

9:00 Welcome, storytelling warm up, equipment checkout
10:00 Video storytelling session
11:00 Storytelling Q&A, lunch, story assignments
11:45 Break to begin work on stories.  Contact subjects, 1-on-1 on story brainstorming, begin recording subjects.
3-6 Everyone returns to talk about issues and prep for Final Cut session
6:00 Creating a efficient work flow Final Cut Pro. Import of first video clips. Q&A with Apple trainer.
7:15 Wrap up with trainers, address story work needed for next day.
7:30 Special break-out session for shooting sports highlight video.  Held at local prep-football game.  All workshop attendees are welcome. Advanced people can continue working until sports break-out session returns.

Saturday
7:30 Advanced group check in with video trainer on shooting needs.
Teams continue to shoot through 10 a.m.
9:30 Main group attendees arrive, check in, social over food.

2:30 Video storytelling walk through session.  Shooting methods tool kit. Components of strong video stories.  Examples with breakdown of process.
3:30 Group video assignments handed out and attendees sent out to practice with helpers until dinner at 6:00. Final Cut story timeline walkthrough. ‘Assembling your video timeline’
4:30 One-on-one work with trainers till dinner at 6:00.
6:00 Dinner in house
7:00 Import video walk through with helpers. Work independently on projects.
9:00 Day 2 ends
Sunday
7:30 Open upper room up for advanced group.
8:15 Main group attendees arrive, social over food. Helpers assist with editing.
8:30 Beginning video storytelling by video trainer.
9:30 Storytelling Q&A
10:00 Break
10:15 Group raw video interview clip evaluation by helpers trainers. Group videos edited by helpers. Trainers check in with advanced group on editing progress.
11:30 Lunch. All cameras, etc. checked in.
12:30 Basic Final Cut story time line walk through. ‘Assembling your video time line’ Final edits made and previewed.
2:00 Final Cut video output/encode walk through.
2:45 All videos encoded.
3:30 All videos shown to wrap up session.
4:00 Closing statements and end of workshop.
