About NWVW
The 2010 Northwest Video Workshop will offer two opportunities to participate in this year’s advanced video conference.
The primary opportunity is attending the Northwest Video conference beginning Saturday, October 16, 2010, where TV storytelling specialists will impart their ideas and techniques when it comes to how they create visual and written stories. Additionally expect to participate in a healthy discussion about complex ethical dilemmas video journalists face in old, new and digital media.
The other opportunity to participate would be in The Shootout. There have been a few changes to the shootout this year and everyone that can participate, should. The breakdown: You will have about 24 hours to shoot, edit and upload your (under 3-minute) video to the workshop contest youtube channel based on a general theme.
What you get out of doing this — the panel of speakers will go through the videos prior to the workshop and post their constructive critiques AND you may come away with a new Canon G11 camera ($500 value), or a set of bags from PortaBrace ($120 value) if the panel places you first or second. (Read more about the shootout)
Competitors may or may not travel to Seattle for the shootout. You may compete in your own market and file your entry online. More details to come on this ‘interactive’ shootout.
There’s nothing fancy here. Come and learn from some of the country’s best video journalists or test your talents for a chance to win honor and prizes.
Overall workshop goals
This weekend will offer techniques and examples to help you take your everyday video stories to the next level. You will learn to go beyond the basic interview, field equipment handling and story mining. Trainers will help you make the most of your assignments.
Trainers
The workshop will include exceptional teachers first and foremost. With staff awards spanning at least 171 Emmys, 24 NPPA regional Photographer of the Year awards, 4 Ernie Crisp POYs and more than 15 national Edward R. Murrow awards, it’s likely there’s never been more major industry awards represented in a single conference.
Join KARE-TV’s legendary Boyd Huppert, 37-time Emmy winner – John Sharify, back-to-back Ernie Crisp NPPA National Photographer of the Year – Darren Durlach, 7-time NPPA Region 8 POY – Douglas Burgess, 6-time Region 11 POY – Kurt Austin, double Ernie Crisp winner – Scott Jensen, and 9-time Station of the Year KUSA-TV’s Anne Herbst for an intensive and rewarding day of learning.
Participation cost
We are shooting for $35 per-person. This is not a profit making venture – the idea here is just to break even. There is a 60-person limit for the conference. NPPA and AAJA members will receive a discount. So register early!
Food and accommodations
Snacks and beverages will be provided on site during sessions. Everyone is on their own for other meals. There will be opportunity for extended learning at a group dinner on Friday and Saturday night. Several hotels are within walking distance from KING Broadcasting. A reduced rate is available right next door at the Holiday Inn.
To keep up to date with the workshop developments you can join the facebook group and eventually sign up for the blog and twitter feeds.
