The Shootout Is Live ~ DEADLINE EXTENDED TO THURSDAY!

We ran into some email notification issues, so we are extending the deadline to Thursday at midnight, PST. If you did not receive an e-mail with login details to the youtube chanel then you need to contact TJ Mullinax immediately (nwvideoworkshop.com/questions) so he can get you the login info asap. If you know someone else who wants to participate, they can register at (nwvideoworkshop.com/pay-online). Thanks to the folks who did receive the theme and made deadline and also thanks to all who let us know there was a problem with getting notification!

THE THEME? “An Important Meal”

__________________

So what is this shootout?
There have been a few changes to the shootout this year and everyone that can participate, should.

The breakdown: You will have about UNTIL THURSDAY AT MIDNIGHT to shoot, edit and upload your (under 3-minute) video to the workshop contest youtube channel based on a general theme.

What you get out of doing this — the panel of speakers will go through the videos prior to the workshop and post their constructive critiques AND you may come away with a new Canon G11 camera ($500 value), or a set of bags from PortaBrace ($120 value) if the panel places you first or second.

What you need to prepare for:
– Expect an e-mail Monday, Oct. 11, at 11/12 p.m. PST, (2 a.m. Oct. 12, east coast) with the video assignment (theme) and the group youtube login and password.
– You must keep the video under 3 minutes (so the panel can get through the videos.)
– Shoot in any format you wish. So long as you can get it uploaded before the deadline. The youtube channel will be closed about 24 hours later preventing late entries.
– Check the youtube channel to see if your video has been critiqued before you arrive at the workshop.
– Notable videos will be presented live by panelists to close out the workshop in Seattle. Winners will be announced at the end of the live video and prizes awarded.

Final shootout note — If you have a coworker or friend that cannot attend, they can still participate in the shootout. They only need to pay a $10 shootout registration and register their e-mail to receive the theme and youtube permission to enter.

TRAINERS:
Kurt Austin, Doug Burgess, Darren Durlach, Anne Herbst, Boyd Huppert, Scott Jensen, Tony Overman, John Sharify, Steve Dowd and Adam Tischler. (Read the staff bios)

A rough breakdown of the workshop schedule is below, the final schedule will be provided at the conference.

CONFERENCE TIMES

FRIDAY:
– Shootout begins (Details to come)
– Social Night: — Friday Oct. 15, 7 p.m. with all of Seattle’s television news directors for a social/forum about the future of local televisions and video. Event is free for workshop attendees. Food and refreshments will be served. More to come on a venue for post-social meet up.

SATURDAY:
Conference Day — should be early 8-ish through a social held that evening at Paddy Coynes.
Shootout conclusion — First 20 videos will be judged before heading to Paddy Coynes, top three awarded sponsor prizes.

—– ROUGH ITINERARY —-

FRIDAY
- Morning: Beginning of shootout (Details to come)
- Night: Social Q&A with Seattle news directors on state of the industry

SATURDAY
Welcome
Scott Jensen and KING-TV Chief Photographer, Steve Dowd, talk about video storytelling passion and why substance soars far above style.

Opening Shot
Kurt Austin and Adam Tischler
Kurt and Adam will give away their secrets on how they stay focused and excited about their craft in the daily challenges of the daily grind.

Storytelling in the Moment
Boyd Huppert — (sponsored by KING-TV)
There’s a unique approach to “layer upon layer” and “gold coin” storytelling. When the concept is understood, it can be easily applied to every assignment. Vital to this technique is character development and making the most of natural moments. In Boyd’s session you will learn the skills to help you create stories efficiently and effectively.

Ethics smethics — dilemmas we all face
Tony Overman & panel
The delightful and engaging TonyO will moderate an ethics panel relevant to all discussion. Questions don’t ever stop surfacing from this murky multimedia pool, so prepare yourself by hearing the difficult mire other journalists have found themselves in. And please share your own situations too! Concerns about image and audio manipulation will be a primary focus of the session.

The Changing Role of Photojournalists
Anne Herbst (sponsored by KIRO-TV)
It’s the most controversial industry philosophy television news has tackled in the modern age – being able to tackle the role of a solo video journalist. Many of us don’t like it, but we have to face the fact we are being called on to do so much more. In this session you will gain insight from Anne on becoming a better multi-discipline photographer. How can you get everything accomplished on your own and still retain the quality you are accustomed to?

Teamwork is key
John Sharify and Doug Burgess
Working together can be a beautiful thing. Doug and John often collaborate for KING5 News to produce stories that would not have been accomplished without solid teamwork. They will speak about how their individual approaches to storytelling work together to make the most of their assignments.

The closer — Storytelling Toolkit
Darren Durlach (sponsored by KOMO-TV)
A shooter’s equipment is important to getting those key moments and Darren will break down how to get the most from what you have on hand. You will learn how Darren used multiple storytelling methods to achieve his back-to-back Photographer of the Year awards.

Shootout Judging
Panel will go through the 20 videos and award top three sponsor prizes. (more to come on this)
